Nancy’s Finishing 2011 Christmas CD

I’ve been working hard finishing up a Christmas album I started recording in July at DKS studios.  The basic tracks include Blues Kitchen members Jan Martinelli on bass and Kendrick Freeman on drums, with myself on guitar, of course.  It includes 7 original Christmas songs I wrote for Christmas concerts at Centerville Presbyterian Church over the last 8 years. Four tracks include the CPC choir.   Also included are 4 jazz instrumentals (Christmas classics), featuring Brad Catania on trumpet and flugelhorn.  We are in the process of mixing everything now, soon to be put in the oven and ready for a tasty Christmas treat!  It will be available by Dec. 1st so please check it out on this website or at i-Tunes, CD Baby, Amazon, etc.  It will be entitled “Come In To Christmas”.  Great for last minute gifts, eh?  Well…all my family members will probably get one (unless they’ve been naughty).  Peace on Earth, baby…

Flying High on the Blue Wing Blues Festival

Blues Kitchen recently played the Blue Wing Blues Festival in Upper Lake, Ca July 7,2011 opening for John Lee Hooker Jr. to a very enthusiastic crowd.  In it’s 5th year this festival is held at the beautifully restored historic Tallman Hotel in the courtyard and included a fabulous BBQ.  Blues Kitchen was very well received at their debut performance in Upper Lake and their CD is now in rotation at the local blues radio station,  where Nancy Wenstrom did an interview with DJ T. Watts the day following her band’s performance.   If you get a chance to go to this unique and intimate festival make sure you get your tickets early next year for the 2012 festival.  A hearty thanks to Bernie, Dee, Nate and T. Watts for keeping the blues alive!

Blues Kitchen CD Review “This one’s a winner”

The Blues Kitchen CD was recently reviewed very favorably in the April 2011 Issue (#9) of The Golden Gate Blues Society Newsletter by Joseph Jordan

“…Wenstrom’s “Blues Kitchen” will give roadhouse/rockin’ blues fans their money’s worth. The songs are chosen well for Wenstrom’s pleasing contralto and her guitar playing stretches from mellow to incendiary as the tunes demand.”

“…Wenstrom’s voice is continuously strong. She’s not a belter, nor does she need to be… the one-two punch of her vocals and guitar playing is enough.  Her equally impressive guitar chops are a treat for listeners throughout… sultry, jazz infused at times, and she can play blues with a feeling.”

“Blues Kitchen enjoys outstanding players in saxophonist Guido Fazio and trumpeter Catania. Keyboards are handled with aplomb by Don Turney. Kendrik Freeman’s drumming is just right throughout…(along with) standout bassist Jan Martinelli…”

To sum it all up nicely he added, “This one’s a winner.”  What more needs to be said?

Thanks Jordan and TGGBS!

Blues Kitchen chosen to play in IBC July 17, 2011

Blues Kitchen has been chosen to play in the IBC (International Blues Challenge) by The Golden Gate Blues Society. The first round is being held Sunday July 17 @ 1:00 – 4:00 at the Poor House Bistro in San Jose.  Come and show your support for the band and enjoy some great Cajun food at this very fun New Orleans style bistro.  We need your help as we try to make our way to the Bay Area finals in November and then hopefully on to the nationals held in Memphis (Sarah Baker’s hometown) in Feb 2012.  Please see our calendar for more details.  Hope to see there for this fun and exciting event.  All three great bands that day will give you your money’s worth!
